I have been thinking about good faith. Not as a moral principle. Not as optimism. But as a way of meeting the world. A quiet willingness to leave the door open a little longer. To allow reality the chance to be more interesting, more nuanced, and perhaps more beautiful than our first assumptions.
I think openness has a feeling. A subtle one. Easy to overlook. The body softens slightly. The mind becomes less occupied with defending itself against possibilities that have not yet arrived. There is more room. More space between a question and an answer. More patience between an encounter and a judgment.
And in that space, other things begin to appear. Curiosity. Wonder. The feeling that people may contain stories we have not yet heard. The feeling that a conversation may travel somewhere unexpected. The feeling that tomorrow is not entirely determined by yesterday.
I have noticed that openness changes the scale of ordinary things. A cup of tea becomes more than a habit. A walk becomes more than a destination. A passing exchange becomes more than background noise. Small moments begin revealing themselves differently when they are met with attention rather than expectation.
There is also a certain warmth that arrives. Not excitement. Not certainty. Something quieter. The sense that life is not merely a collection of problems to be solved, but a living landscape continually unfolding beyond the edges of our understanding.
Perhaps this is why wonder feels so closely related to wisdom. Both require the humility to acknowledge that reality may be larger than our current perspective. That people may be more complex than our first impressions. That beauty may exist in places we have not yet looked.
I sometimes wonder how many good things enter our lives through doors that only openness can reveal. A friendship. An idea. A moment of unexpected kindness. A path we never planned to walk. A version of ourselves that emerges not through force, but through discovery. Like winter slowly turning toward spring beneath the surface of the earth. The change is not always visible at first. Yet something is already softening. Something is already becoming.
Perhaps good faith is not the belief that everything will go well. Perhaps it is something gentler. A willingness to meet the unfinished world with curiosity. To remain available to surprise. To trust that life may still contain more wonder than we have yet encountered.
