I have been thinking about the small places we go when we need to come back to ourselves.
Not necessarily somewhere beautiful.
Not somewhere carefully designed.
Just somewhere the world becomes a little quieter.
For some people, it might be a chair beside a window. A balcony after midnight. The kitchen after everyone has gone to bed. A long walk with no destination. The driver’s seat before going inside. A familiar song playing softly in the background.
Maybe it isn’t even a physical place. Maybe it is ten minutes with the phone turned over. A cup of tea. A shower. A few pages of a book. The first quiet moments after closing the door.
I think we all need somewhere to put down the invisible things we carry through the day. The conversations. The decisions. The expectations. The small performances of being okay.
There is something wonderful about having a place where nothing is being asked of you. You don’t have to explain yourself. You don’t have to accomplish anything. You don’t have to be interesting. You don’t even have to feel a certain way. You can simply exist there.
I have noticed that these little spaces can become more important than we realize. They give the mind somewhere to exhale. They give the body a chance to stop bracing. They remind us that life is not only made of things that need to be done.
Sometimes life is also the quiet moment between them. The light on the wall. Rain against the window. A warm cup between your hands. The sound of a fan turning slowly overhead. Nothing extraordinary. And yet, somehow, enough.
Perhaps this is why I have become more protective of quiet. Not because the world is something we need to escape from. But because we need somewhere to hear ourselves inside it.
A little room. A little pause. A place where the noise can fall away long enough for something softer to return.
What does your quiet space look like?
